I am an 8 year old Shih Tzu. Folks have called me a grumpy old man and I don't entirely disagree. I was originally rescued from a neglectful home. I came to Homeward Trails in rough shape. I was covered in painful mats. It was really hard for me to be groomed and have all those mats shaved away. I was terrified and I was in pain. Now, I still have a hard time at the groomer's because it brings back bad memories. I have been making new friends here at the Adoption Center. I've met a couple dogs who are just as sassy as I am and we get along like peas in a pod. I enjoy going outside and exploring the yard. I smell everything I can and then I find a good place to lay down and soak up the sun. My human friends here understand that I wasn't always treated with kindness. They don't touch my paws or head, where I feel most vulnerable. They wait for me to ask for attention and then it's all booty scratches and back massages! I could get used to this! I am looking for a home with adults who can be compassionate about my difficult past. It can be hard for me to be handled when I'm uncomfortable so I am looking for owners who can advocate on my behalf and who can tell when I am scared. Though I am the perfect size to be scooped up and snuggled, I just don't feel safe doing so. I would much prefer to sit by your side or on your lap instead! I am a lazy dog, and I don't care for much exercise, but I could stand to lose a couple pounds, so if you are willing to help me with that I would be very grateful. This fee INCLUDES spay/neuter and microchip. We are proud to partner with the following veterinarians who offer a free first exam for your animal, exclusively for HT adopters: Caring Hands Animal Hospital, Palisades Veterinary Clinic, Sunshine Animal Hospital and Clarendon Animal Care and all VCA Animal Hospitals. Additionally, any VCA hospital will cover illnesses up to $250 at no cost to any Homeward Trails adopter. We also provide a 30-minute phone consult with a professional dog trainer at Fur-Get Me Not within the first 30 days of adopting - just for HT adopters in the Arlington/Alexandria area.
