Gimmie a Break: With Tuxie and Sasha First things first. Tuxie insisted on her name being first in the title. Foster mom Sasha says Tuxie has a lot to say and she is obviously exercising that ability right off the bat. Tuxie also wanted to make sure that no grades were going to be discussed in this article. She's not a big fan of grading systems. Agreed. So let's get going! Starting with the obvious. Tuxie hated being in a kennel at the shelter. It was way too confining and stressful for a cat who loves to play. Sasha has found out that Tuxie's favorite toys are small balls and fishing type wand toys. They are working on 'fetch!' Tuxie loves to knock things off of tables and counters. Not sure if that really counts as play. Maybe more of a hobby? On to Tuxie's personality! Tuxie has convinced Sasha that she is a smart cat! Tuxie says don't rub her belly, but do listen to her when she is talking because all her meows carry equal weight! Tuxie says leave me where I am, another way of saying , I prefer not to be picked up. Tuxie is learning how to trust. You may or may not remember that Tuxie was found wandering the streets with an Elizabethan collar on, having just had recent surgery. No one ever came to look for her. Sometimes trust needs to be relearned when an animal has been through such a trauma. Tuxie keeps it simple when it comes to eating. She's not picky about her food or her treats. Don't worry about running a dripping faucet for Tuxie to drink from, the water bowl suits her just fine. Litterbox visitations are always on target! She is currently using scoopable litter with no problems. Tuxie switches easily from tree dweller to bush dweller (being up high or down low), to participate in her favorite pastime, people watching! Tuxie will jump on counters to watch what is going on, part of her tree dwelling nature. Sometimes she people watches from an obscure low spot. We all have disinfectant wipes around for those countertops right now anyway. Tuxie tries to play with the two resident cats, but isn't sure how to. They are good at ignoring her hisses. There are no dogs or children in the home. She will try to sneak outside, so keep an eye on those doors! Tuxie agrees she will need an adopter who is patient and willing to give her the time she needs to feel comfortable in their home. Given Tuxie's personality traits, she would be better suited to a home that is fairly quiet. Give Me a Break is relatively new program at LCPA designed to give cats the chance to be in a home environment for a bit. Away from the shelter, a cat's true personality is usually revealed as their stress level decreases. Many thanks to Sasha for giving Tuxie a break.
